Andy Clausen, Mingjia

New York-based composer/performer Andy Clausen presents Heart of Tones - Solo Trombone at The TANK, a two-volume set to be released on Westerlies Records. Recorded in the profound reverberation of a converted railroad water silo now known as the TANK Center for Sonic Arts in Rangely, CO, new original works are presented alongside existing repertoire spanning five centuries of musical history. From medieval chant, to shape-note hymns, to Ellington ballads, to works from contemporary composers Nico Muhly and Jeff Beal, and sonic meditations from Pauline Oliveros, expect the unexpected through a program of lush brass tones, luxurious resonance, live effects processing and looping. With an impressive roster of collaborators including Joanna Newsom, Fleet Foxes, and Wynton Marsalis, he thrives across genres. As a founding member of The Westerlies, he blends the precision of classical with the spirit of rock, earning acclaim from NPR for their "folk-like and composerly" music. A Juilliard graduate, Andy is also a dedicated educator, serving on the faculty at The New School and previously directing Jazz at New York Youth Symphony, inspiring countless students through innovative initiatives.

Mingjia writes songs that are equal parts fantastical & relatable, & sings them with courage & honesty. Mingjia recently performed a solo voice set at Healing Force and we thought the two solo voices would make a nice pairing in celebration of Clausen's upcoming release.
