Advanced High School Jazz Workshop

Are you in high school?

Do you like jazz?

Are you obsessed with your instrument(s) of choice?

Would you like to grow your technique and knowledge and collaborate with other players on your level?

In our after school Advanced Jazz Workshop, students will engage in intensive study of modern jazz harmony, small group interaction, performance skills and repertoire and prepare their skills for education and playing beyond their high school years.

To enroll, you must audition on January 12th at Healing Force of the Universe, (time slots available between 1-5pm). Seven students total will be accepted, one each on the following instruments: saxophone, brass (trumpet, trombone or other), vocal, piano, guitar, bass and drums. 

For auditions please prepare one Blues tune and one Jazz Standard (not blues) of your choosing. Prepare to play these tunes solo, and perform the melody + 2 to 3 choruses of improvisation. 

FOR DRUMMERS - demonstrate four choruses of swing drumming over a blues form, two choruses of time and two choruses of soloing. Prepare to demonstrate this on both sticks and brushes.

Then, demonstrate 4 choruses of straight eights style drumming in. agenre and song of your choosing. 2 choruses time. Suggested grooves: Bossa, Mambo, Songo, Funk, ECM style straight 8ths, ETC.

Recommended Jazz Standards: “All The Things You Are,” “Body and Soul,” “Recordame”

Logan Kane: If you hang around the Los Angeles music scene, it’s likely you’ve heard of bassist and composer Logan Kane. In the world of jazz and creative music he has performed on upright and electric bass with some of the highest profile artists including David Binney, Louis Cole, Chris Potter, Becca Stevens, Joel Ross, Nate Wood, Justin Brown, Roy McCurdy, Dan Weiss, Steve Lehman and Damion Reid. Fueled by the excitement of the current Los Angeles renaissance, Logan Kane introduces an enigmatic and innovative compositional voice to the international jazz community. Logan is the bassist for thriving LA Punk-Funk band Thumpasaurus. His other projects Dolphin Hyperspace (with Nicole McCabe) and Outside World (with Henry Solomon) have received critical acclaim worldwide.

Enrollment costs: $950 per student for our Spring 2024 semester upon acceptance.
