Beyond the Sheet Music
Creative Improvisation & Musical Exploration for Young String Players
with Daiguo Li
Beyond the Sheet Music: Creative Strings Master Class with Li Daiguo
Recommended for intermediate to advanced violin, viola, cello, and double bass players with at least 2 years of experience.
What happens when you step beyond the sheet music?
In this unique master class, acclaimed composer, improviser, and multi-instrumentalist Li Daiguo invites young string players to explore new ways of making music through creativity, listening, and experimentation.
Designed for students with a solid foundation on their instrument, this workshop introduces techniques and musical concepts rarely taught in traditional classical training. Participants will discover how to create their own musical ideas, improvise with confidence, and unlock new sounds and possibilities on their instrument.
Topics will include:
• Extended techniques and sound exploration
• Free and structured improvisation
• Swing rhythms and an introduction to Gypsy jazz
• Modal music and creative melody-making
• Polyrhythms and groove
• Ensemble listening and musical interaction
Whether you're a classical student looking to expand your musical vocabulary or simply curious about new ways to express yourself through music, this workshop will encourage you to listen more deeply, take creative risks, and discover what your instrument can do beyond the written page.
No improvisation experience is required—just curiosity, an open mind, and a willingness to explore.
