Celebration at Big Sur Screening

Held in September 1969 on the grounds of the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California, only one month after Woodstock, was the 6th of an annual music festival curated by Joan Baez. Joni Mitchell performs, only a month after Woodstock, where she had not accepted the invitation. Young joins Crosby, Stills, and Nash in one of thei first live show appearances, rocking hard on “Down By The River.” Stills breaks into a fight and gets “loved out of it.” Face-painted hippies living in school buses and other freaks dance naked and are livin’ the dream, man. How perfect that we’re screening this on 4-20. The first of a monthly music film series. And the gospel number “Oh Happy Day,” led by Dorothy Combs Morrison and the Combs Sisters, makes a perfect finale! See you there brothers and sisters! - Susan Littenberg.
